Common System Types and When They Make Sense

Whole-House Sediment + Carbon Filter
Good first stage for most homes. Removes dirt, rust particles, chlorine and/or chloramine (if on city water), and improves taste/odor.

Water Softener
Essential if your hardness is above 5 gpg. Prevents scale on fixtures, water heaters, and appliances. Salt-based softeners are most effective for well water in this region.

Iron & Sulfur Removal Systems
These use specialized media (like air injection or catalytic carbon) to oxidize and filter out iron and sulfur. Critical for homes with staining or odor complaints.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Drinking Water System
Installed under the kitchen sink. Removes the smallest contaminants and gives you the best tasting water for drinking and cooking. Highly recommended if anyone in the home has health concerns or you just want the cleanest water possible.

UV Disinfection
If your water test shows bacteria, a UV light system sterilizes microorganisms without chemicals. Often paired with other filtration.

What Most Upstate Homes Actually Need

From experience working on properties from Mountain Rest to Fair Play, the most common successful setups are:

Whole-house sediment/carbon filter + water softener (for hardness + basic filtration)
Or a dedicated iron/sulfur removal system + softener if staining and odor are severe
Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink for drinking water

Avoid equipment that does not have certified resins, carbons, or media. Standards matter when it comes to your drinking water.

Maintenance Reality Check

Any good system will need occasional maintenance:

Filter changes every 6–12 months
Softener salt refills
Media replacement every 5–10 years depending on system
